ACEC/MN & SMPS Joint Breakfast Seminar:

  • Major demographic trends in Minnesota and the United States, including the imminent aging of the Baby Boom into retirement age.  This, coupled with fewer in the 18-24 year age group, will change many aspects of the labor market, real estate, and government over the next five years.  
  • Key demographic trends, the relationship among the trends, impact on real estate market and labor force
  • Where the next projects will be, infrastructure, LRT plans, etc.
  • Population trends – how collegiate institutions are impacted (Mankato, St. Cloud, Rochester, Duluth), infrastucuture, LRT, etc.
  • What are the state’s hot target markets: Commercial, retail, education, transportation, healthcare -- Details as to why those areas are flourishing.
  • What does the future look like for the AEC industry in terms of positions, salaries, shortage of workers. Along the same lines, how does this impact education trends – what’s being done to promoting students to get into the AEC fields
  • What impact will outsourcing and the labor market have on engineering and construction

Presenter: Dr. Tom Gillaspy has served as the Minnesota State Demographer since 1979.  During that time, he has been involved with a wide-ranging set of issues, applying an understanding of demographic trends in such areas as the state’s economy, health care for an aging population, education, higher education, welfare reform, rural population change, labor shortages, immigration, housing, government spending, and the aging state workforce.  The demographer is in the Minnesota Department of Administration.
